Synopsis

Enterprise finance concerns the consequential allocation of money across time, claims and uncertain futures. An investment may exhibit an attractive expected return yet threaten solvency; cheap borrowing may increase financial distress; and substantial reported profit may coexist with a shortage of cash. This chapter develops an integrated, critical account of financial management and investment decisions through twelve approved domains: financial objectives, funding, discounting, capital budgeting, financing structure, working capital, forecasting, distributions, portfolio risk, valuation, SME finance and emerging ethical questions. A transparent, purposive synthesis of seminal corporate-finance scholarship, methodological critiques and official Rwandan secondary evidence establishes the conceptual foundations and institutional boundaries. Two explicitly hypothetical Rwandan investment alternatives are evaluated with reconciled net present value, internal rate of return, profitability index, payback and sensitivity calculations. A separate cash-conversion-cycle model and leverage stress case demonstrate the divergence between value, liquidity and debt-service capacity. Evidence from Rwanda’s 2024 enterprise survey and MSME FinMap is placed alongside international empirical scholarship without extrapolating household financial access to corporate creditworthiness. Original decision instruments integrate project-specific cash flows, financing constraints, risk, stakeholder protection and review triggers. The central argument is that defensible finance is neither the mechanical maximization of a valuation metric nor the unconditional avoidance of debt. It is accountable intertemporal decision-making subject to evidentiary, contractual, operational and human constraints. Proposed integrative relationships remain conceptual, not newly validated causal findings.
